Michael Wrenn started out in the music business running nightclubs and working with bands in the US and UK throughout the 80s before moving into film working in exhibition, distribution, acquisitions and subsequently shifting his focus to development and production.
Costa Botes has made a career as a documentary filmmaker working at the micro budget and studio budget (Making of Lord of the Rings and Forgotten Silver to Struggle No More and Yes, That's Me); he is drawn to enigmatic subjects and uses an observational fly-on-the-wall approach to draw out the private and intimate. Costa has a long track record shaping complex narratives focused on compelling characters. His rapport with musicians and ability to capture them in intimate settings is well proven.
Shane Danielsen is a writer, investigative journalist, film critic and ex-music journalist (at his most involved in music in the mid 80s when working for Australian publication RAM and interviewed Martin Phillipps on a couple of occasions). Shane brings a depth of research and international perspective on both the music and the time. His encyclopaedic musical knowledge and skill at rendering exposition into compelling stories is also well proven.
Costa and Shane will bring a mix of complementary skills to the direction of the film. Working together, they will ensure we have a balance of archival and contemporary material and directors on hand in both New Zealand and Europe. Relationships with the US, UK and Australasian music scene will allow us easy access to the luminaries we want to interview.
Jackie Dennis has worked in the music industry since 1981 and knows, or knows how, to contact many of the people we wish to interview. More recently she has worked in film and television production. Jackie has expert knowledge in music licensing having been a music publisher, a music supervisor for feature films and produced a music based television series. This experience will ensure we are able to maximise our music budget and deliver clearances well beyond our limited budget.
